If you have kids in school, it’s highly likely that you have encountered Scholastic Book Orders.
We get a bundle of 3-4 every month from preschool.
And every time I see those book order forms I do feel a little nostalgic. I remember getting them when I was a kid in school. I remember how fun it was to fill out my order, bring my money to school to give to the teacher (this is all done online now), and of course get the books when they arrived in the mail. Yes, I am realizing that I have been a book nerd my entire life. 🙂
While it’s fun to order books, we just can’t justify ordering every. single. time. I like to support my child’s classroom, and we do, but we have also discovered another fun way to explore the book order forms and get a taste of the new books that are out there.
And it’s so simple.
It’s called the library.
I am not sure how other public libraries work, but Bismarck has such an awesome online request service. With a few clicks, I am able to search for books (or CDs or DVDs) and request them. When they are available, I get an email stating that I have seven days to pick them up. When we go to the library, all of my requests are arranged neatly on a shelf ready to go. I don’t have to try to physically find the books in the library. It’s already been done for me. I. Love. This. Service.
So back to the book order forms. When we get them, the kids and I browse through them, circling the items that we would like to “order”. This is not only fun for a self-declared book nerd such as myself, but it also generates a fun discussion of books with my kids.
Then when the kids are occupied with something else, I head over to the library’s website, see which items are available for request, and I’m done.
The next time we head to the library, our books that we “ordered” are usually in, so we pick them up and bring them home to enjoy.
Some are immediate hits. Others only get looked at a few times. But the best thing is that we are enjoying books together.
My absolute favorites this time:
Dragons Love Tacos. This one has been around for a few years, and I don’t know how I missed it until now! Since we got this one, I am the one wanting to read it every night, mainly because I think it’s fun to read. It’s really easy to get into. I find myself automatically adding a little spunk to my voice, and before I know it I’m adding hand gestures and moving my head with a little sass.
Mother Bruce: This one just came out recently, and it’s super cute. A grumpy bear steals some goose eggs to whip up a new recipe (that he found on the internet, of course), and the eggs end up hatching. What I love most about this book is that there is humor in the text and illustrations that adults will find entertaining.
So anyway, those are our favorites right now, and the next time we get a book order, I’m sure we will score some new hits.
Do you have any bedtime reading hits? I would love some more recommendations! 🙂
Have a terrific day!
